A back to school routine, one week is enough

A back to school routine is easiest to set up in the last seven days of the holidays: move bedtime earlier a little at a time, check uniforms, shoes and books, put key dates in the family calendar, and practise the morning routine once before day one. In Malaysia the 2027 school session starts on Monday, 4 January 2027, for Group A and B.

Screen timeAfter homework and chores are doneNot in the morning, so homework comes first

How does a family calendar help in the school term?

The school term brings a lot of dates: the first day, PIBG, tuition, term breaks and sports day. In the UrusFamily family calendar they all sit in one place, each member has their own colour, and Malaysian national public holidays are already in.

Chores can be set for school days only, such as filling the water bottle or packing the bag, and kids tick them from their own profile. The paper checklist above works without the app.

Questions about a back to school routine

When does school open for the 2027 session in Malaysia?

The 2027 school session starts on Monday, 4 January 2027, for government and government-aided schools in both Group A and Group B. It ends on 2 December 2027 for Group A and 3 December 2027 for Group B, according to KPM.

When should we start moving bedtime earlier?

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests helping children adjust to earlier bedtimes a week or two before school starts. Do it a little at a time, for example 15 minutes earlier each night, then keep the same time every night.

How heavy should a school bag be?

The American Academy of Pediatrics says a backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of a child's body weight. For example, a 25 kg child carries no more than 2.5 to 5 kg. Pack only the books for that day's timetable.

How do I prepare my child for Year 1?

Focus on routine, not lessons. Practise the morning routine in real time, let your child try opening the lunch box and water bottle alone, label everything, and explain who drops off and picks up each day.

How is a morning session routine different from an afternoon session?

Morning session children do homework and chores in the afternoon, before maghrib. Afternoon session children are better off doing homework in the morning, with short morning chores and one chore after dinner. Exact session times differ by school.

How much pocket money should a child get for school?

There is no official amount. Work it out from food prices at your child's school canteen and whether they bring a packed lunch. The UrusFamily allowance guide and allowance calculator help you set a consistent weekly amount in RM.
